COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized, evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps in identifying and modifying negative patterns of thinking and behavior. As individuals feel more empowered to challenge negative thinking then newer and healthier behaviors can more easily emerge.
What is CBT?
CBT is rooted in the understanding that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected. By examining these connections, we can uncover how unhelpful thoughts contribute to emotional distress and unhealthy behaviors. CBT works to challenge these negative thoughts and replace them with more balanced thoughts. Here are just a few ways that CBT is used to help:
- Anxiety disorders
- Depression
- Chronic Pain
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Eating disorders
- Impaired Sleep
- Stress
How CBT Works
The underlying premise of CBT is to identify and explore unhelpful thought patterns that ultimately lead to emotional distress, resulting in unwanted behaviors. Clients learn practical strategies to challenge and modify these thought patterns including developing new and healthier coping mechanisms. CBT works best when clients practice these new skills outside of sessions, which keeps the momentum of therapy sessions moving forward.
